Florida Lobster Season Prep Checklist

Regular lobster season in Florida runs from August 6 through March 31. Use this checklist to make sure your gear, licenses, and knowledge are ready before you hit the water.

Licenses & Regulations

  • ☐ Florida saltwater fishing license (if required)
  • ☐ Review current FWC spiny lobster regulations
  • ☐ Know the bag limit: 6 per person per day during regular season
  • ☐ Know the minimum carapace size: 3 inches (or tail length 5.5 inches)
  • ☐ Familiarize yourself with closed areas and special zones

Measuring & Compliance Gear

  • ☐ Lobster gauge (carapace measuring tool) — required on the water
  • ☐ Measure every lobster before keeping

Diving & Harvest Gear

  • ☐ Tickle stick
  • ☐ Lobster net or snare
  • ☐ Dive flag (required when diving)
  • ☐ Mesh bag or cooler for catch

  • ☐ Life jackets for all passengers
  • ☐ VHF radio or communication device
  • ☐ First aid kit
  • ☐ Check weather forecast before departure
  • ☐ File a float plan with someone onshore

Boat & Equipment

  • ☐ Fuel topped off
  • ☐ Navigation lights working
  • ☐ Anchor and line
  • ☐ Dive flag pole and float

After the Dive

  • ☐ Count and measure your catch before leaving the water
  • ☐ Keep lobster alive or properly iced
  • ☐ Clean and rinse gear after saltwater use
