Lobster Gauge Requirements
Florida Lobster Gauge Requirements
Florida spiny lobster must meet minimum size requirements before harvest. Using a properly sized gauge is required to ensure compliance with FWC regulations.
Minimum Size Requirement
Always check current FWC regulations before harvesting. FWC currently lists the minimum size as a carapace length larger than 3 inches, measured in the water.
- Measurement is taken along a line parallel to the centerline of the body
- Tail length must be at least 5.5 inches for lobster tails separated from the body

What is a Lobster Gauge?
A lobster gauge is a measuring tool used to quickly and accurately determine if a spiny lobster meets the legal minimum size. Using a gauge in the field helps you avoid accidentally harvesting undersized lobster. FWC requires possession and use of a measuring device at all times while harvesting.
Who Needs a Gauge?
Any recreational harvester taking spiny lobster in Florida waters should carry a gauge. It is your responsibility to ensure every lobster you keep meets the minimum size requirement.
