Do I need a lobster gauge to harvest spiny lobster in Florida?

Yes. FWC requires recreational harvesters to possess and use a measuring device at all times while harvesting spiny lobster. You must measure every lobster before keeping it.

What is the minimum size for Florida spiny lobster?

Always check current FWC regulations before harvesting. FWC currently lists the minimum size as a carapace length larger than 3 inches, measured in the water. Tail length must be at least 5.5 inches for tails separated from the body.

How do I measure carapace length?

Carapace length is measured from the rear edge of the eye socket to the rear edge of the carapace, along a line parallel to the centerline of the body. A proper lobster gauge makes this measurement fast and accurate in the field.
